About the department
The Department of English was established in the year 1950. In the beginning years the department offered only the subject as a Pass course to the students. In 2002, the department introduced B.A ENGLISH MAJOR which implemented the CBCS in 2014 – 2015.
Presently, the Department of English has an intake capacity of 200 students for the English pass course and 66 seats for Honours. The department has been dedicated to teach, nurture and provide comprehensive study of language to its students. The UG course of English provides comprehensive learning by covering all the important sub-fields of English. It aims to provide a strong background about learning of the language and English literature.

The vision of the department is to develop the department as a centre for academic excellence by providing quality oriented teaching that may bring out the potentiality of the students. We seek to foster knowledge of the English language in our students by teaching a variety of literary and analytical skills.

- To strengthen the liberal education of students by developing a deepened understanding of language and literacy , the value of critical reading and effective writing and the richness of literature, past and the present.
- The faculty of the department has adopted varied teaching methodologies to make the classroom environment receptive and non-oppressive for its students.
- In addition to the traditional method of chalk and talk method classes, special interactive classes by applying group discussion, question-answer and demonstration method are arranged to encourage the students and thereby improve their learning.
- The socio-cultural background of the students, many of whom are from vernacular medium of schooling finds difficulty with the language that results in the increasing of dropout rates, is a major drawback for the development of the department.
- The lack of sufficient number of faculty is a great hurdle in the path of imparting quality education.
- Students are made aware of the wide scope of the subject for their future.
- Add-on courses like Spoken and Communicative English courses can bring new opportunities for the students of this department as well the students from other departments.
- To balance the student- teacher ratio by increasing the number of teaching faculty in the department.
- To prepare the students to be well qualified to read and speak in English.
